Wagga Wagga how I love you!
Just before I left for Japan, on my honeymoon I was overjoyed to get a phone call from Wagga Wagga City Council congratulating me. I was one of only 3 artists invited to paint a Street Art mural for the Lost Lanes festival. My smile could not get wider.
My street art piece was to be on the back of Knights Meats and Deli, I had to do something special. With the local community in mind I came up with this tongue in cheek piece of street art. I hoped to relate it back to the “larrikin” spirit found in all Aussies.
The common idiom, Like a bull in a china shop, informed the root of my piece. I was later surprised to hear rumours that there used to be tunnels below Wagga Wagga, thought to have been dug by the Chinese residents of the area. Possibly back in the gold rush days? A serendipitous connection.
In this street art piece I used a mixture of Montana BLACK spraypaint(from Union Heights) and Taubmans Exterior house paint. It can be tricky to create photorealistic street art pieces but this one was particularly challenging, due to the multiple types of surface making up this wall. It would test my physical limits over the coming days. Like A Bull was born.
I’m so very proud of this piece, especially as it seemed to become a crowd favourite and the local community has taken a real ownership of it. I’m sure this rough-headed bull will be smashing china for quite a while.
A huge thank you to all involved and those that documented and promoted this piece of street art over the time I was up and down ladders and scissorlifts. You’re all tops!
